05/20/2008 - Atlanta, GA (Baseball Betting) - The New York Mets signed infielder Abraham Nunez to a minor league contract on Monday. He will report to New Orleans of the Pacific Coast League.

The 32-year-old Nunez signed a minor league deal with Milwaukee on January 23, 2008, but was released on Saturday.

Nunez spent his last two seasons in Philadelphia, hitting .234 with 16 RBI while appearing in 136 games in 2007. Largely used in a platoon role at third base or as a late-inning defensive replacement, Nunez made nine errors in 225 chances at the hot corner last season, good for a .960 fielding percentage.

The switch-hitting Dominican's best season came in 2005, when he hit .285 with five home runs and 44 RBI in 139 games for the St. Louis Cardinals. In seven playoff games during his one season with the Cardinals, Nunez went 9-for-24 (.375) at the plate, helping St. Louis reach the NLCS.

Nunez spent his first eight major league campaigns with the Pittsburgh Pirates, and has a .242 career batting average to go with 18 homers and 209 RBI.
